"Always move forward; never turn
back." -- Bl. Junipero Serra
Serra
Retreat
is a facility which provides the time and space for people to
get in touch with God. Located in the hills above the beaches of
Malibu, California, the Franciscan friars and staff continue a
tradition, begun in 1943, of weekend group retreats,
individual private retreats, days of recollection and
workshops nurturing the faith of the people of southern
California. Serra Retreat is an inspirational setting of quiet
beauty to reflect on one's relationship with God, others and
self.
The Grounds
Garden walks in which to stroll,
reflect and relax compliment these accommodations. Weekend retreats
normally
begin on Friday evening and conclude on Sunday afternoon with lunch.
The same components of quiet, natural beauty and uninterrupted time
which make for a good personal retreat also provide the perfect
setting for any church groups, schools, non-profit and profit
organizations to reflect, plan and set their goals. Many of these
different
organizations have used these facilities and grounds for such
purposes. The friars and staff hope that you give yourself or your
organization the opportunity to "come apart and rest awhile." (Mark
6:13)
CLOSED TO VISITORS ON
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
Guest Rooms
Named after Junipero Serra, the
apostle of California and founder of
the California missions, Serra
Retreat assists people
in
moving forward in their spiritual lives, embodying
the motto of Junipero Serra, "Always move forward;
never turn back." A
serene getaway with proximity to the cities
of southern California, Serra welcomes people of all faiths
and is available year-round except during the Christmas
season. With a maximum occupancy of 100 guests, Serra can
provide you or your group bedrooms, two large conference
rooms, small meeting rooms and a dining room.
What is a Retreat?
This is a retreat: A time for god, a time for assessing our
relationship with God. We spend time with the people we
cherish and respect. We spend time with God. A retreat
nurtures our spiritual life in an environment away from the
ordinary distractions of life. In the Scriptures, we read that
Jesus would simply go off and pray. Each and every one of us
needs time to be alone, and a retreat provides us with this
opportunity. Organizations also need these times. We need to
pause and discern where we are; where we are going; where we
want to be and how we get there. A retreat provides these
possibilities for any organization.
Time is our most precious commodity, yet if we just hurl
ourselves along, are we really living? Taking time to assess
our life honestly and without pressure will help us get more
out of life and this is why Jesus came, "that we may have
life and have it to its fullness." (John 10:10) Whatever
your purpose may be, we encourage you to take some time apart
to focus on your relationship with God or to spend time
accomplishing what you need to do. Remember to "Always
move forward; never turn back." --Junipero Serra.

Meet BUD a faithful friend and
companion. Looking at you, looking at him! The retreat
attraction canine at Serra. He welcomes guests in our lobby and
invites admiring attention. You'll find his presence and poise
wonderfully winsome. If you throw his ball, he will retrieve it.
If he sees a chipmunk, get out of his way. This is Father
Warren's baby so treat him with TLC.
My Dog My Friend
Member of the Family,
What would I do without you,
My precious, furry friend?
Part mischief, but all blessing,
And-faithful to the end!
You look at me with eyes of love;
you never hold a grudge,
You think I'm far too wonderful
to criticize or judge.
|
It seems your greatest joy in life
is being close to me.
I think God knew how comforting
Your warm, soft fur would be.
|
I know you think you're human,
But I'm glad it isn't true.
The world would be a nicer place
If folks were more like you!
|
A few short years are all we have;
One day we'll have to part.
But you, my pet, will always have
A place within my heart.
