We encourage you to take a moment to share your experience at Serra Retreat. We welcome suggestions and observations. Our goal is always to improve your future visit.
I haven’t been up to Serra Retreat in a few years. The website is beautiful, yet clearly can’t express the true beauty and peace that you’ll find upon arriving, visiting, or staying for the weekend. This place of peace and beauty has always been my place to regroup and get refocused. I thank God for everyone involved in making this little piece of heaven down here on earth.
God Bless
I’m at Seminary in Oxford and am to be ordained this July. My journey began at Serra Retreat about 6 years ago when I stumbled (rather boldly – sorry) upon the retreat house.
I’d moved to the US and was working at Cedar Sinai Hospital. Looking back, I was searching for something, but I didn’t know what it was, or where to find it.
I saw a sign on the High Way, down by the Ocean, pointing to the retreat house. I arrived and was struck by the tranquillity and calm with such a hard thump I listened. I came back several times to just walk around or sit, and just be.
One time, I spoke to one of the Sisters about an issue of faith which was blocking me. I tried my best to argue about God’s hard judgement, and she was so patient, kind, humble, and yet still very human. I can’t thank her (because I don’t know her name) enough. It does show that sometimes a seed, nurtured by the Spirit, can grow!
Sorry for the sermon, but I wanted to thank the community for what they are doing. I wanted to share a little of my journey with those who are exploring and who may be unsure about visiting the retreat house – come on, it’s in Malibu!
To the Community of Franciscans – thank you. The fruits of your labour are helping to build and sustain the Kingdom.
Throughout all of my travels both domestic and international, I have never experienced a more sureen and peaceful place than Serra Retreat. The brothers and all the staff there are so welcoming. The stations path is exceptional. I’ve been trying for years since to have my church in Boston create this same type of stations as this. I have yet to actually stay overnight there but made many day journeys there to simply reflect and pray and take in on of God’s most beautiful creations with the mountains overlooking the ocean. For anyone searching or simply wanting to experience a closeness with God, Serra’s the place! God’s blessings to you brothers and all at Serra for your wonderful contributions.

I have been going to the Serra Retreat for about 10 years now, and yes, it has transformed me as I know that I have become more reflective, patient and more aware of my own surroundings especially the beautiful and wonderful God’s creation around us ALL the time! With particular mention the everlasting influence of a long-time retreat master there, Fr. Emery “PEACE” Tang, OFM (bless his soul) I have learned to slow down and not in a hurry all the time. Together with the other Franciscan Friars, and Sister Susan, Father Emery has changed my spiritual life to a much higher level.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you and God Bless you all!
God bless Serra Retreat and the Fransciscan! I love you all!

I recentlycompleted a 3-day weekend private retreat at Serra Retreat. It is a most amazing and special place. This is my second visit. The staff is wonderful, the tranquil grounds restful to the soul and the sea breeze a boost for the spirit. Also, the Adoration Chapel is a great gift for spending one-on-one time with Jesus – truly the most impactful moments of my time there. It is a special place where I can go and nurture my soul and bring my needs and prayers before the Lord as I seek his strength, guidance and will for my life. I encourage people to come and take a break from the world to renew and rest here in this special Canyon and place of true retreat. “Bud Bud”, the retreat house dog also greeted me so graciously upon my arrival ~ it was wonderful from beginning to end.

It looks so peaceful and beautiful. I wish I could afford something like this.
